Mentoring Academy provides the most effective courses available today, and carefully mentors
each student as they successfully complete a rigorous individualized curriculum tailored to meet their
individual interests. skills and needs—engaging them
in life long learning.
Academic Advantages to this approach include:
Detailed monitoring of student learning so issues of motivation, organization, style, study skills can be addressed as soon as they manifest themselves;
Social and academic life is with other students with a focus on their sharing what they are learning with each other;
Projects can be integrated more effectively than can be accomplished in 20 student classes or single student self-paced settings;
The whole school can move to other locations for study: two weeks in Washington DC, classes in the morning, Smithsonian, government in the afternoons;
Many short courses lead by local experts involving the students can be enriching and core: art welding, pottery, Middle East politics, dinner for six, auto maintenance, computer programming.
History shows us that mentoring relationships can be solid, powerful and productive.
Mentors: Each mentor works with a limited number of students (approximately 10 to 12) helping them select from courses developed by Mentoring Academy staff or any of the other sources, then providing support academically and socially so they are successful.
Flexible schedule: Because of the nature of the courses, students can adjust schedules to meet schedules of their lives, take courses intensively or take several at the same time. Although courses are tailored and self-paced, school will be held in regular time, 9 to 5:30 each day. In school hours, students complete essentially all work so evenings can be spent relating to family and friends, reading books, and exploring projects that are dictated by student interests, not required from school. Solid work in the school day is sufficient time to accomplish the goals.
Effective Courses:
This union of great resources provides for dramatically more effective courses than single teachers can develop. The academics are then coupled with the support, mentoring and social life that can be provided in face to face education.
